Creating a Website: hitches and glitches - got the blues!!
Hi there -
Just a quick moan today. I have been building a small personal website on Wanadoo members' sitebuilder's facility - "mysite" - and was getting on well until last night. I posted some writings about local crimes and about mental illness (the two are not necessarily linked). I clicked on a button to add my newly written material - and bingo, I could not get any access after that. The whole thing seemed to go dead: I got just a blank page with no explanation of what had happened. I tried the "Refresh" button to no avail.
Not only that - I waited another day to see if it was a temporary glitch. But again sould not get access. Also, I tried requesting a new website. All that happened was that the application page kept on reverting to an empty form. Access was totally denied to me. I had no major problems with it on earlier days (but did have trouble with downloading.) Is it Wanadoo, my ISP - the former Freeserve, or is it me? Did I post something illegal? I was discussing the recent local, Twickenham killing of a young Frenchwoman - apparently the work of a serial killer, as there was another murder early last year (2003), and about 3 similar attacks (not resulting in death). This is if interest to me as a criminology lecturer (if only part time) - I can contribute some of my own ideas here.
I tried emailing their help service, but all I got was a pre-laid-out set of answers, none of which helped - except to say that people's websites are deleted if they post something illegal. But I don't think mine was like that. I was not even giving another website, as far as I recall, and was not slandering anyone. Computers adn their services are a mystery to me - sometimes they seem great - other times so frustrating - things happen that you can't understand. Seems like a small demon or gremlin gets into them.
God give me the grace not to let this frustration become an obsession! I was enjoying doing my own website and actuallly getting somewhere. Emailing itself became a chore and bore - it either 'times out', or you get lots of 'spam'. I have a virus killer and spam killer (etc.) program, but this often just tells me that I have a 'trojan' or something similar, and then deletes part of the features on my PC, which then operates more sluggishly. One just can't win!
That's it for now. My son is doing better with his mental health, but still in hospital. He is coming home on Saturday, in 2 days, as a trial for up to 3 days, to see how he copes. Must stop and cook a meal now. Cheerio for now. I hope you sympathise with my above grumbling about PCs and website building...
Cheers and love, Tigey
